The stator, which stabilized the radio telescopes, was rather like a long spool with four bearing support structures which interlocked with two similar structures from the rotor, the outer, spinning structure which contained the living areas. As the Tsiolkovsky had been abandoned before it was completed, the finished part of the rotor came to an end half way along the length of the stator. At this location, the rotor did not have a support structure projecting into the stator. It was just a hollow space between the stator to the rotor.

“If you were in their shoes, where would you expect us to come back in?” asked Nyla.

“I'd be sure to put plenty of men at the main airlocks for each section,” said Brock.

“Right,” said Nyla. “But there must be dozens of little hatches all along the skin of both the rotor and the stator. No way they can spread themselves out enough to watch them all...”

Brock interrupted, “But they probably have detection equipment all along the rotor so they'd know where to go to help someone in an emergency. They'd know exactly where we were if we tried to come back in that way.”

“True,” said Nyla. “We have to get to another section. The Blue Section would be best; that one had the least work done on it. Our environment suits might give us an edge.”
